Release date & Where to Watch

The Dog Man movie will be released in US theaters on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025and in the UK on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025.

Following its theatrical release, it will stream on Peacock for the first four months, then move to Netflix for ten months before returning to Peacock for the final stretch of the pay-TV window.

Plot

Dog Man follows the half-dog, half-human police officer as he battles his nemesis, Petey the Cat, to protect the city. Petey's latest scheme involves cloning himself, resulting in the creation of Lil Petey, a mischievous kitten meant to assist in his criminal plots.

However, things take a surprising turn when Lil Petey forms an unexpected bond with Dog Man. When Lil Petey is captured by a common enemy, Dog Man and Petey must reluctantly team up in a race against time to rescue the kitten. Along the way, they discover the power of family and unity, even between sworn enemies.

Which Novel is Dog Man Movie Based on?

It is based on Dav Pilkey’s popular graphic novel series of the same name. Launched in 2016, the series has grown to 12 books, with the next installment, Dog Man: Big Jim Begins, set to release later this year. Pilkey, who also created the Captain Underpants novels, has seen many of his books, including The Scarlet Shedder, reach the top of the New York Times bestseller list, making it one of the best-selling graphic novel series.

What’s next for the Dog Man?

The next book, Dog Man: Big Jim Begins, is set to release on Dec. 3, 2024. But that's not all—there's also a video game adaptation in the works. In August 2024, GamesRadar announced Dog Man: Mission Impawsible, a 2D side-scrolling platformer. Published by Mindscape, the game will be available on all major consoles and PC by the end of the year. Players will get to explore familiar locations from the books and tackle fun challenges, with more details, including the release date, coming soon.

Behind the Scenes

Back when the Dog Man movie was first announced, Animation Magazine revealed that six-time Emmy winner Peter Hastings, known for iconic shows like Pinky and the Brain, would direct the adaptation. Hastings has a strong history with Dav Pilkey’s work, having served as executive producer for The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants.

Dav Pilkey, the global bestselling author and award-winning illustrator behind Captain Underpants, is also the creator of the series. The upcoming animated action-comedy film is based on Pilkey's popular graphic novel series, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures.

In a 2019 interview with Barnes & Noble, Pilkey shared, “I made my first Dog Man comic when I was in second grade. Back then, he was a regular dog who got superpowers after being struck by lightning!”

The film adaptation was first announced by DreamWorks in December 2020, with Hastings directing due to his experience with Pilkey’s works. Karen Foster, known for her work on Spirit Untamed, joined as producer in 2024. The series, which debuted in 2016, has since expanded to 12 titles and even launched a spinoff, Cat Kid Comic Club.
