Plot

Jung Jinsu, the founder of the New Truth religious cult, returns after being condemned to hell for several years, only to discover that both the New Truth and its extremist faction, the Arrowhead, now dominate society. As he navigates this new reality, he questions the implications of his resurrection and the doctrines preached by his cult. Is resurrection a curse, as the New Truth claims, or could it lead to true salvation?

Based on Yeon Sang-ho’s webtoon series, Hellbound unfolds in a world where apparitions appear before those deemed guilty, announcing their decrees of damnation. Two organizations, the cult-like New Truth Society and the militia-esque Arrowhead, exploit the fear of the masses, staging public executions of sinners.

The first season concluded with a shocking cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for answers regarding the nature of the apparitions and decrees. In a desperate bid to protect their newborn, Toughie, characters So-hyun and Young-ja confront Hell Beasts, ultimately sacrificing themselves. However, Toughie survives, leading to questions about the decrees' validity when his parents are turned to ash. This event shakes the New Truth's foundations, especially when Park Jung-ja, a previously dead character, mysteriously resurrects at the end of season one.

Season two is set to delve deeper into the aftermath of these events, particularly the implications of the sudden resurrections. With new cast members, including Kim Sung-cheol as Jung Jinsu, the series will explore how the resurrection of condemned souls—like Jeong-ja and potentially Jin-su himself—affects the doctrines of the New Truth.

As the New Truth and Arrowhead grapple with the societal chaos wrought by these resurrections, the narrative will address the core questions about sin, redemption, and the meaning of life and death. Creator Yeon Sang-ho has hinted that the story will move beyond the original webtoon, suggesting a fresh direction for the characters and the world they inhabit.

In the climactic finale, Min Hye-jin emerges as a key player, using her legal expertise to confront the fanatics of the New Truth and Arrowhead. The previous season's conclusion raises profound questions about the nature of heaven and hell, challenging viewers to reconsider their understanding of sin and salvation.

As the new season unfolds, fans can expect a narrative that continues to challenge and intrigue, exploring themes of faith, power, and the unknown consequences of resurrection. The return of characters and the implications of their resurrections will undoubtedly lead to a reexamination of what it truly means to be “hellbound.”
