What Happened in The Sandman Season 1?
In The Sandman season one, Dream, one of the Endless, is imprisoned by occultists for over a century. After escaping, he sets out to restore his realm, The Dreaming, which has fallen into chaos during his absence. Dream recovers his stolen tools, including a confrontation with Lucifer in Hell, and defeats John Dee, who temporarily wields Dream’s ruby.
The season follows two main storylines from Neil Gaiman's comic series: Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House. In the first arc, Dream embarks on a journey to recover his tools, while the second centers on Rose Walker, a Dream Vortex with the power to manipulate dreams. Rose’s status threatens the Dreaming, but her grandmother Unity Kincaid sacrifices herself, revealing Rose as a descendant of Dream’s sibling, Desire, who had plotted to destroy him.
Alongside these major arcs, the season also explores smaller stories, like Morpheus's connection with his sister Death and his friendship with the immortal Hob Gadling. It also includes standalone episodes like “The Sound of Her Wings” and two stories from Dream Country: “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Calliope.”

What is the Connection Between The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives?
The Dead Boy Detectives characters, Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) and Edwin Paine (George Rexstrew), first appeared in The Sandman #25 comic. Originally intended as a spinoff of Max’s Doom Patrol, the series moved to Netflix, allowing for a stronger connection to The Sandman, since the streamer holds both shows.
In Dead Boy Detectives, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), who is Dream's sister, chases Charles and Edwin to take them to the afterlife, a change from the comics where she allows them to stay on Earth. Despair, another Endless member, also appears in Dead Boy Detectives. Though other comic links, like hell's landscape and Lucifer's role, differ from The Sandman, these plot points could still unfold in future seasons.
