Plot

This Halloween, Velma, Scooby-Doo's iconic sidekick, stars in her own spooky special, Velma: This Halloween Needs to Be More Special. This Max Original Adult Animated special continues the storyline from the ongoing Velma series, promising festive shenanigans for the beloved amateur sleuth.

Following the events of season two, the special centers on Velma's friends racing against time to resurrect her by locating a powerful grimoire while evading an angry spirit. As the annual “Sexy Halloween party” approaches, they must confront their deepest fears to survive the night.

This reimagining of the Scooby-Doo gang offers a darker and funnier take on Velma Dinkley’s origin story, exploring her high school life and complex relationships with friends like Daphne, Fred, and Norville (who is notably not referred to as Shaggy in this series).

Although the series faced criticism upon its release, earning a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a mere 7% audience score, its popularity led to a renewal for a second season and this Halloween special.

What Happened in Velma Season 2?

Velma season two continues the adult animated series' controversial journey following its record-breaking debut on Max despite mixed reviews from critics and fans. The entire season, consisting of ten episodes, was released simultaneously on April 25, 2024, but it faced a similar backlash as season one.

In this season, Velma and her gang pursue a new serial killer who is mutilating men for an undisclosed vendetta. As they investigate, they discover that the murders are tied to Project S.C.O.O.B.I., a failed Cold War military operation involving brain-swapping. The season also introduces a reimagined version of Scrappy-Doo, depicted as a test subject from Project S.C.O.O.B.I.

The finale, titled “Til Death,” takes a dark turn when Scrappy fatally wounds Velma. However, in a twist, he dies after Velma's ghost possesses his body. The episode concludes with Amber, the daughter of former Hex Girls vocalist Thorn, revealing that Velma can be resurrected through magic—but only on Halloween night.

Will There be Velma Season 3?

Although Velma is set to return soon with a Halloween special, there’s currently no confirmation from Max regarding a third season. The unique take on Velma Dinkley has seen significant changes from previous versions of the Scooby Gang. However, fans may still hope for a scenario where they all team up with a talking dog to solve mysteries in their iconic van.
